Winter weather returns to WNY
area
March 23
An afternoon commute turned
upside down for a motorist on the Northbound RT219. An untimely winter storm
passed through the area, dumping 3 inches of sloppy snow on the roadways. North
Boston and Boston EMS were alerted at 1722hrs on the RT219 Northbound near the
Zimmerman Road overpass for a vehicle accident with entrapment.
Arriving 2nd Assistant
Chief Blank assumed command after sizing up the incident involving a Ford
Explorer that was rolled on it's side with the driver trapped. Arriving on
scene, 1st Assistant Chief Bernas ensured the crews working had an adequate safe
area to operate, reducing traffic to the passing lane. Chief Crotty assumed
Operations and ran the extrication effort.
Boston EMS Paramedics
arrived, assessing the patient in the vehicle after crews stabilized the
vehicle. Once EMS gained access, and the victim was protected, crews began the
extrication, which led to a total roof removal and removal of the steering
wheel. Once access was gained to the patient, the tricky job of immobilizing her
began. Crews extricated her to the waiting Paramedic Ambulance where the victim
was transported to ECMC for treatment.
