New Station Progress Since the founding of the North Boston Volunteer Fire Company in 1904 the current building has gone through an evolution process of additions to better serve and house the equipment required to protect the lives and property of the residents in Boston. As the town grew, coupled with the technological advances of firefighting equipment, the original 14’ x 14’ x 26’ NBFC tower built in 1905 and equipped with an 28” alerting bell purchased from Sears and Roebucks for $14.60 in 1906, needed to be expanded to meet the fire protection and social needs of the community. In 1916 the membership approved the first addition to the building and this was completed the summer of 1918. This was the beginning of the process to expand.
1905 1918 1950 additions from 1950 to Current
Due to the need for larger bays to accommodate the larger firefighting trucks and equipment mandated today, coupled with the safety concerns for responding firefighters and motorists with the close proximity of the truck pad to Boston State Road, membership determined it was time to plan for a new building to address the needs of the future. Starting in the early 1990s properties were purchased on Herman Hill Road with the plan to erect a new building set back off the highway to solve the safety and space concerns. With the properties paid for through rentals and fundraising, the New Hall Committee was established with the task of designing an obtainable building design and property layout. Since the posting of the “Planned Site of new NBFC Fire Hall” sign on the new site in February of 2006, a lot of required behind the scenes activities have been going on to see this project through. These includes time consuming issues of property surveys, title and deed searches and revisions, rezoning, asbestos abatement (unplanned expense!!), demolition of existing structures on the property (benefit of live burn training), permits for storage of donated fill and building, clearing and compacting of site, meetings with Town Officials to ensure town codes are met and countless meetings of the New Hall Committee to keep the project on track. We feel our committee, with the aid of Tim Kirst of Kirst Construction, and local architect Glenn Christner, has designed a building and property layout to aid us in serving the community well into the future. The building structure will blend into the existing neighborhood while expressing the local history of the fire company through the incorporation of the original 1905 bell tower design and the original bell mounted in the tower as the focal point of the building. Our goal is to continue to provide a building for not only housing firefighting equipment and firefighter training but also continue to provide community groups a place to meet and a shelter for residents to seek refuge in times of emergency. We thank all who have donated to the project thus far and hope once we complete the Town Planning Board project review phase with Town Board’s approval of their referral and get the shovel in the ground, others, seeing tangible progress, will support us with the building project through donations and support of our fundraisers. Hopefully all required aspects of the project will be in place in the near future to assure the shovel will be in ground by mid summer! More to follow………..! Check back often for pictures of progress
