Amsdell Middle School Drill
May 13, 2004
North Boston was one of many fire companies that took part in a
multi-agency drill. Crews in Rescue 7 responded as a FAST Team to the Middle
School Drill.
Plans
for the drill were a multi-faceted effort, spearheaded by Allan Brown, Director
of Facilities for the Frontier School District. The drill was to evaluate the
effectiveness of the schools, fire units, school transportation, and police
department efforts. Units that responded included Lake Shore, Scranton, Hamburg,
Big Tree, Blasdell, Woodlawn, Lake View, North Evans, North Boston, Rural Metro
Ambulance, Town of Hamburg Police, Emergency Management Team, Erie County
Sheriff Air 1, Erie County Fire Safety Office.
As the scenario played out, crews entered and performed fire suppression,
rescue, large area search, ventilation , and rescuing a downed firefighter. The
scenario started at 0830hrs and played into the following scenario. Crews were
dispatched on a reported boiler room explosion, with persons trapped in the
school. As units responded to the school, staff members from the school effected
an evacuation of the students from the structure. 8th grade students were
transported by Frontier Transportation to Frontier High School, while the
remaining students we evacuated to watch the drill go down.
