North Boston Engine 1
Serving the North Boston Fire Company since 1984, this American LaFrance Century Series pumper was one of the last stainless steel vehicles to roll off the production line in American LaFrance's Elmira Plant. Engine 1 was the first automatic transmission Engine owned by the fire company, due to the hilly terrain the apparatus had to climb. All the previous automatic transmissions were not capable of climbing the terrain with efficiency, so apparatus was purchased with manual transmissions. Equipped with a Detroit Diesel, Allison Automatic Transmission, 1500gpm pump with 750 gal tank, this Engine has seen slight modification since it's purchase. When initially purchased in 1984, firefighters were able to ride on the tailboards of apparatus. Due to injuries and firefighter safety, firefighters were prohibited from riding the tailboards in 1992. In 1993, American LaFrance completed a conversion to enclose the jump-seats, adding two fold down seats. Equipped as an ISO Class A Engine, this engine is typically the second engine to respond to incidents. Engine 1 carries 550 ft 4" LDH supply hose, 100 ft 3" LDH, 600 ft 2", 200 ft 1 3/4" pre-connect, 400 ft 1 /12" pre-connect, in addition to the booster reel for minor wash downs. |
